Hi,I'm Summer

Color Trip- A Styled Shoot

Sep 16, 2018

It was late at night.  I was all alone.  My family was sleeping soundly in our house next door.  Loud electronic beats were pulsing over my studio speakers, a cold cup of black coffee that had already been reheated a couple of times sat next to me on my work table.  I was totally in the zone because I work well under pressure and the styled shoot I had agreed to during the busy month of June was scheduled for the next day here on my farm and I had a lot to make in a short amount of time.  Maybe it was all of those factors combined, but I as I was making everything I couldn’t stop thinking that these flowers were like an acid trip, full of color and texture and a healthy dose of weird, but in a totally good way.  😉  Ever consider using an acid trip as your wedding inspiration?!  HAHAHA!

One of the reasons I love styled shoots is because I get to do things that I don’t normally get to do in my normal life as an event floral designer.  I get to experiment and try new things, usually with a crew of other creatives who I adore and without many parameters.  It’s a creative rush and hopefully clients will see the imagery we create and get inspired.

This shoot was conceived by Kimi of Curated Event Rentals and Caitlin of Gallivan Photo.  Both women are good friends of mine and I always jump at the opportunity to co-create with them when given the chance.

My goals for the shoot were:

-to use a saturated color palette, one that would contrast beautifully with the subtle dusty neutrals of our hight desert backdrop (nailed it)

-to create a modern floral headpiece, try my hand at floral tattoos, make a small super textural, funky-fresh bouquet, tag team a tablescape with our shoot stylist/coordinator Christine of Swoon, and fashion a floralcake topper to compliment Mama Foxtail‘s painterly 3 tier cake (nailed it)

-exert as little energy as possible because we were going to shoot on my property (totally failed at this, by the way, and went the complete            opposite direction)

One of the unexpected things that I ended up LOViNG about this shoot was that since we were here on my property, my boys were super curious and kept running around wanting to help us all set up.  It was kind of a cool mom moment for me to think that they were experiencing and witnessing first hand what working behind the scenes is really like.

p.s.  My littlest guy River has a cute kid crush on Ty, our bride, so I think he hung around for selfish reasons.  But who could blame him.  She IS a goddess.

Sooooo, what do you think?  Do you like the color palette?  Would you ever wear a floral head piece like this one?  How about a floral tattoo?  Do you like canned rosé?

Whether this is totally your jam, or way too funky for you, I hope you enjoyed these photos as much as we loved bringing them to life for you.

Until next time.

XOXO-

styled shoot
